A Doctor with Great Bedside Manner
Richard Boakai was a quiet, studious young man from a small town in Liberia. He was the only one in his family to go to college, and he dreamed of going to medical school in America. It wasn't easy, but his parents made every effort to help him succeed. If their son achieved his dream, the whole family would benefit from this tremendous investment, no matter how hard it was to make. Richard worked hard to earn scholarships, and was accepted by a medical school in Baltimore, MD. He excelled at his studies and was subsequently hired by one of the best hospitals in Baltimore. Richard's future looked bright.
Richard Boakai's parents were lucky not to have seen the following headline: "Former medical student Richard Boakai is accused of raping a 15-year-old girl over the course of many months." The young girl confided in one of her teachers, telling her of the abuse Boakai had been inflicting on her for six months, between September 2006 and March 2007. The girl was scared and ashamed, and hadn't told her parents because she was afraid of their anger and punishment. The teacher reported Boakai to the police, but their information was limited. Police issued a warrant for Richard Boakai's arrest, charging him with rape, sex offense, assault, and child abuse. He must have known his victim talked, because by the time they came to arrest him, he was gone.
Boakai has relatives in Maryland and California, but they have not heard from him since March 2006. They know Richard is head-strong and secretive, and fear he could be depressed because of the allegations against him. Police received information that Boakai applied for a VISA extension in Pennsylvania, Vermont, and Montana, but this hasn't led to his arrest.
